May. 26th, 2004 12:29 am Growing up is full of big moments.

Some of them you can see coming from a mile away and some you can't see at all.

See I had this problem. My favorite television show of all time is the Wonder Years. For years, the show has been filled with moments that make sense. Its writing recreates those moments in life that we all seem to forget.

Hense my problem. Last fall semester there were two new episodes in the middle of the afternoon. It was the highlight of my day. But it caused me to miss my accounting class, which wasn't my best grade ever.

Then ABC Family took the reruns off the air. I tried downloading episodes, but usually only the sound would work.

So in May I found the answer to my problem. I bought all 115 episodes on DVD off eBay. I start each day with three new episodes and sit back and remember those wonder years.

May. 13th, 2004 12:06 am Running through the experience

I've been doing a lot of driving to places to run. Today I went to Grand Rapids with my buddy Tony, who was trying to qualify for nationals at a track meet. Although I started my run in a sketchy area, the hilly sidewalk quickly lead me downtown. I have to say I was impressed. The community college had a huge presence, people were buzzing to Van Andel to see the Eagles farewell tour (how many times can classic rock bands say farewell?) and it was clean.

Sunday my run took me to Frankenmuth. I love how that place thrives on the local family-owned knick-knack stores. No name breweries, wineries, antique stores and restaurants. The only corporation (besides hotels) down there is 7-Eleven! I love it. This is why my run was extremely sad. I stopped into the School Haus Square. It's an old elementary school they turned into a mini mall years ago. I remember being a kid, walking through all the neat stores filled with eagles carved out of wood and sweatshirts with Golden Retrievers one them.

As I walked into the building Sunday, a cold dusty breeze hit me. The first store was closed off by bars and empty. The second was for lease. Another had just boxes. Upstairs there were only two survivors. Glen's Sports Cards and The Artist's Shoppe. And let me tell you that the unfriendly Glenn didn't have any cards that aren't stuffed into my closet. Jim Silva, a wood cutter, was working at The Artist's Shoppe. I asked the older man what happened to all the businesses?
"Since Sept. 11, they went down one by one," he said while he continued to carve little heads out of wood with a small knife.
I don't really know how those small businesses every made a profit, but it's sad to see them go.

My favorite mile of all time has been ruined. It was perfect. Mysterious. And always fast. When I ran that mile, something always clicked. My stride would flow, my legs would feel light and there was always a cool breeze blowing from the west. Of course the sidewalk was uneven. The grass on the parkway would hang over onto the cement and it was always dark at night. So dark that the street light 700 meters into the mile was visible the entire run and casted a intimidating shadow as I ran past.

As they expanded 17 mile run to include a left turn lane this winter, they destroyed the sidewalk. Now the poor runners of the world are left to deal with gripless sand, uneven grass and rocky roads.

Everything is changing in life, why can't my favorite mile just stay the same?
